A family affair
Weingut Schumann-Nägler: Unique wines with a family heritage since 1438
Our family has been an integral part of Rheingau wine history since 1438. We’re quite proud of this. Today, our estate is run by the 25th generation. and the 26th generation is already playing “hide and seek” in the vineyards.
Such a long family tradition coud not have evolved without generations of commitment to sustainability. We don’t regard sustainability as a modern marketing concept, but rather a responsible approach to viticulture that we owe to the environment, our customers, and our family. We combine traditional methods of wine-growing with the latest findings on modern winemaking. Our goal is to produce the best quality possible in harmony with nature.
This is our driving force and daily challenge.

Philosophy
Caring for our vineyards
With a vine density of 5,000 vines per hectare and an age of up to 40 years, we have a cultivation area of almost 40 hectares. Our locations are among the best in the Rheingau. This makes it all the more important to care for them in an environmentally friendly way. This includes, for example, permanent greening in every second row and short-term greening in the other rows to ensure a nutrient-rich humus supply. To keep pests away, we rely on the use of pheromones.
Class
instead of quantity
For us, low yields per hectare are the prerequisite for good quality. This requires a lot of sensitivity and manual work in the vineyard. Thinning and timely defoliation, for example, act like a wellness treatment for the grapes. Ultimately, they should fully mature under optimal conditions in order to be able to exploit their full potential. The highlight of every year for us is the harvest. Everyone pitches in. From morning to night!
The winemaking
High-quality, ripe grapes are the basis of every good wine. In order to maintain the quality of the harvested material, we have to be quick and work precisely. State-of-the-art wine presses guarantee gentle processing of the grapes. After the must has been pre-clarified through natural sedimentation, it is stored in stainless steel tanks. What the must then needs is time, attention and dedication. Under constant control, fermentation takes place within six to twelve weeks. Computer-controlled temperature control guarantees optimal fermentation. The longest possible contact with the fine yeast shapes the wines and brings the desired balance. The wines whose natural residual sweetness is to be preserved are interrupted in fermentation by means of greater cooling. After filtration, the wines are gently bottled. The wines are now stored in our winery under perfect conditions.

Our history
We have been a cornerstone of the wine tradition for almost six centuries. This centuries-old family and company history has made us an exceptional asset that carries with it a rich past. Over the generations, we have learned countless lessons from this long journey, lessons that are deeply embedded in our vineyards and in every drop of our wines.
